In the course of my PhD, I undertook research both at the School of Architecture and Planning, MIT (USA) and at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Firenze (IT). In my doctoral research, I have developed a methodology to integrate Soundscape Studies within the field of Urbanism, mainly focusing on developing new tools of mapping and design soundscapes in contemporary cities: Firenze Sound Map and the “sonic niche”. The dissertation Sull’immagine sonora della città (On the Sonic Image of the City) was recognized with the 2010 National Institute of Urbanism Award – for the best Italian dissertation in Urban Design and Territorial Planning, and the 2012 City of Florence Research Award – for distinguished monograph to be published. Then, the Firenze University Press published my first single-authored book Sull’immagine sonora della città (On the Sonic Image of the City) (Radicchi, 2012).
